Grocery Store Food Haul #1- Trader Joe’s

Hello there! 🙂

Today I want to share a few of my favorite food items I got from Trader Joe’s. I love this store. It’s just so unique and adorable. Trader Joe’s is definitely cheaper than Whole Foods, but some of the items are still more expensive, than if you buy them from the regular grocery store.
Good example for that are the non-organic bagged apples. The bag of non-organic lady pink apples was $2.99. This means $1.495/lb. In the regular grocery store I can find apples that range from $0.70/lb to $3.99/lb. So that’s why I didn’t buy these apples again.

So let’s get started!

Organic Brown Rice Penne Pasta

I bought it because it is gluten free. I think I have a gluten sensitivity. Not the diarrhea kind, but if I have more than  couple of bites of wheat and I become really bloated and I feel sluggish. I am thinking to go and see a doctor. When I eat gluten free diet I feel awesome, almost like I am flying.  I feel light.

Vegetable Masala Burger

I love these veggie burgers. I never had them in a bun, like a real burger. I just eat them as they are, most of the time in a salad. They have mild indian spices flavor. Since I am an indian food fanatic, these babies are right up my alley. 🙂

Indian Fare

I never had these before, but they look promising.  I would pair them with basmati rice. I would eat them with a naan too, but I am trying to cut back on the gluten.

Spinach & Kale Greek Yogurt Dip and   Genova Pesto

I really like this dip. The first time I bought it I wasn’t too crazy about it, but I bought it again, and I am obsessed now! 🙂 It is creamy, light, flavorful with a little crunch from the carrots in it. Yes, little gems of carrot pieces!

The pesto is going to make appearance in pasta dishes, sandwiches and soups.
Eggplant Garlic Spread

Do you see what is written under spread? Yes, Bulgarian! I am from Bulgaria. Haha! This spead is the best! It is good spead on bread, as a dip or whatever you little heart desires.  I love it on a piece of good bread and spinkled with some feta cheese. If you happen to want to eat it like a real Bulgarian would,  just do this:

1) warm up your bread
2) spead some of this spread on top of the bread
3) sprinkle some feta cheese
4) enjoy! 😉

Uncured Chicken Hot Dogs

I bought these just because I needed one to make my childhood pizza and I didn’t want to drive to another store just for a pack of hot dogs. These hog dogs taste good and are really low in calories.

Coconut Cranberry Granola

I like this granola. I put it in my greek yogurt for breakfast, or just as a snack. This morning I had 1 cup of fresh mango chunks, 1 cup of vanilla bean greek yogurt and 1/4 cup of this granola. It was so good! It tasted so tropical to me! 🙂

Greek Yogurt NONFAT

These yogurts were under $1each. I got three flavors: vanilla bean, mango, and strawberry. The vanilla bean one was inhaled with my breakfast this morning. It had nice flavor and it wasn’t sour.

Just Almond Meal

I love this stuff for baking. I make a variety of protein snacks following different bloggers’ recipes. I may future some of my favorite ones later on my blog.

Blueberry Cheesecake Ice Cream Wedges

OMG!!! These are divine! The graham cracker crumbs are not too much. They put enough of them to remind you of cheesecake, but one little wedge is just 100 calories! Perfect! I wish they had different flavors available in the store.

I didn’t buy any produce because I think it is more expensive in this store. I usually buy my produce in the local polish/international food markets, Jewel Osco or Meijer, when on sale! 🙂 I think that if I am going to be buying non-organic food, why spend more?!

After Labor Day Green Smoothie

I was reseaching green smoothies for the last couple of days. I was craving it so much that I wanted to whip up one late last night. But I didn’t because according to one of the sources, I read online, you have to wait 30-40 min before and after consuming any other foods. For example in the morning you should have the smoothie first thing, even before your morning coffee. Then wait 30-40 min and have your favorite cup of joe. Well after 30 min I was already hungry for some breakfast with some protein in it.
The smoothie was really refreshing. It wasn’t too sweet. I was able to taste the greens so I was feeling good about myself that I am actually getting so much nutrients first thing in the morning. I was able to taste the sweetness too. I felt good because it wasn’t as sweet as some regular fruit juices, which give you a headache/sugar coma.
Maybe I can stick to these green smoothies in the morning for a while and see if they will help me feel more energetic, without drinking so much coffee! 🙂

● Spinach And Apple Green Smoothie

For one serving:

Spinach leaves
Baby lettuce leaves
2-3 inch piece cucumber
1/2 small apple
1/2 medium banana
Honey to taste

My smoothie came out liquidy, because I used probably about 1/2 cup of water, but I liked it like that, more like a green juice.

Great way to start the day! 🙂

Do you have a recipe for a green smoothie you want to share?

Things I Am Loving Friday #1- 8/30/2013

I saw this blog post idea on couple of my favorite blogs that I read everyday. My best favorite blog that I never skip a day without reading it is Peanut Butter Fingers. Julie is such an inspiration for me. Because of her I decided to start my own blog because I am passionate about all things fitness and good nutrition. So lets get started!

● Revlon Top Speed

I love this color. It’s called Candy. It is really fast dry nail polish and it can become stringy at times. I painted my nails a couple of days ago and I received many compliments.

● OPI Start To Finish Base and Top Coat

I bought this product for the first time a couple of years ago. It is the best way to make your mani and pedi last a long time. It’s a little pricey but it is better than buying base and top coats separately.

● St. Ives Make-up Remover & Cleanser

I use this product to remove my make-up. It works really gently on my skin and gets the job done to remove all inpurities. My face feels soft and refreshed. I love this! 🙂

● The Happiness Project

I love this book so much that I try to read it so slowly that it will last me a longer time to fully enjoy it. I know it sounds crazy. Usually I finish my favorite books as fast as I can, but in this case I can’t help it. This is also because I don’t like to re-read books or re-watch movies. This book makes me a better wife, because it makes me think about the little things that I usually overlook. 🙂

● Thoughtless by S. C. Stephens

I really liked this book and the story in it. I can’t really compare it to “Fifty shades of gray”. I think it is better. Now I am reading the second book of this trilogy and maybe I can write a review on it.

● The Oxygen’s Diet Solution

This is the ultimate fitness book/bible. Everything about the oxygen’s lifestyle is in it. Everything is summed up, organized and fool proof to use. Money well spent in my opinion.

● Blogilates  Fitness App

I love Casey’s new iphone app. All iphone users must download it.  🙂

I have many more favorite things to show but I will post them in future posts.

Banana Strawberry PB2 Protein Cookies

The other day I had two dead bananas! I called them “dead”, because they had a lot of brown spots. I usually like my bananas to have nice, vibrant, yellow color. For me any brown spots on the banana equals “process of dying”. Haha! 🙂

I decided to experiment and make them into some kind of protein balls. After I mashed them I added PB2, protein powder and some instant oats. The mixture was still kind of  runny. It wasn’t even sticky. It looked like a bowl of oatmeal. Then I added another scoop of protein powder and more oats. But the consistency didn’t change much. Then I decided to bake it into cookies. It was a total experiment. I didn’t even add eggs.

Banana Strawberry PB2 Protein Cookies

1 cup instant oats
2 medium bananas, mashed
3 tablespoons PB2
1 tablespoon sugar free strawberry jam
2 scoops vanilla protein powder

1) Mash your bananas. 😉
2) Add all other ingredients in the same bowl and mix well. You may need some water if it is too thick, add small amounts at a time though.
*Remember it is easier to add then take away.*

3) Scoop the mixture out with a spoon, and make the cookies as big or as little, as you want them to be.
4) Bake them at 400 F for until they are done.
5) Enjoy! 🙂

What do you do when a recipe you are making fails?

Chilli Chicken Muffins and Protein Falafels

Hello! 🙂

Today I decided to take the day off from the gym and prepare some food for the next couple of days. On the menu tonight is high fiber chilli chicken muffins and protein falafels.

The chicken muffins are my creation, but the falafel recipe I found on http://www.bodybuilding. com.

Chilli Chicken Muffins

1 lb. ground chicken breast meat
1/4 cup instant oats
1 (15 oz.) can kidney beans, rinsed
1 egg
1/4 cup red onions, chopped
1/2 tablespoon chilli power
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon gharam masala
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon thyme
1 teaspoon salt

*( you can use any spices that you like)*

In a big mixing bowl mix all the ingredients except the beans. When everything is mixed add the beans and mixed them in.
Use a 6-muffin pan. You can use baking cups and just scoop the mixture into the muffin pan, distribute the mixture evenly in each muffin hole.
Set the oven at 400 F and bake the muffins until golden brown on the tops.
Makes 6 muffins.

They really taste like a bowl of Chilli in a muffin form. The beans keep the meat moist, and give the muffin really nice nutty flavour. By combining the two together,  you have protein, slow digesting carbs, and fiber all in one portable package.  😉

Onto the falafels now! 🙂

Protein Falafels

1 (15 oz.) can of chickpeas (garbanzo beans)
1/2 cup egg whites
3/8 cup unflavoured protein powder
2 garlic cloves
1/4 cup red onions,  chopped
1/4 cup instant oats
parsley, cilantro
lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon coriander
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 tablespoon salt

*( you can use low sugar pea protein, or any other unflavoured protein)*

Put all of the ingredients in a food processor. Mix everything together. You may have to add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water to get everything going. Use a baking sheet. Scoop out 12 even amounts of the mixture onto the baking sheet, just like making cookies.
Preheat the oven to 400 F and bake them until golden brown.
Makes 12 falafels.

Enjoy! 🙂

I had a taste for falafels for a while. I wanted to go and get some, either from Subway, or some middle eastern place. But I don’t think they are healthy, if they are deepfried, or contain tons of added chemicals, to keep them from going bad fast. When I saw the recipe I immediately thought about my tub of vegan protein powder that I didn’t like, but kept it in my cabinet anyway.

The first time I used it, I hated it. My taste buds weren’t ready for it. Now I used it, in this falafel recipe, and I think I found new purpose for this protein powder. Because I hate to waste food.

How do you prevent wasting food?
Any good recipes with leftover ingredients?

Mess in my brain

I thought about a new blog post for way too long. The problem is that I want to write about so many things. I want to do so many things that my body and my memory can’t keep up. My mind is rushing like a wild horse through books I want to read, through things I want to do and then blog about them, through all the ideas of different challenges I want to participate in, or create new ones myself. My mind and thoughts are way ahead of my physical me.

My latest interests are:

1) Science of exercise

2) Becoming a personal trainer

3) Reading tons of fiction and non-fiction books

4) Experimenting in the kitchen, ”cleaning” up different recipes

5) Becoming a Spinning instructor.

May be I can use this as a check off sheet, just mark through things and keep adding more! Anyway…

Recently I stumbled upon Bill Gates website, because he likes to write book reviews there. And due to my powerful attraction to books I saw his website on Facebook. I kind of want to be like him.

NO, not his money! (Maybe, but not!) 😉 No! I admire him for how wide his interests are. We all read about topics that interest us. Nobody reads stuff that we don’t care about. This man (Bill Gates) is so rich and famous that he doesn’t need to read anything, or even moves his finger! His money can do everything for him. But no, he is reading constantly enriching himself and his views of the whole world, and everything in it. When I grow up I want to be like him! haha (too bad I am already grown)

As a little challenge for myself I want to pick just three of the books he read recently and read them myself. Maybe I can write a review or two on them. I am so fascinated by his interests and what he does for the world. I don’t know maybe this is just me. Maybe some of you don’t even like him, or think of him besides, when you have a problem with your computer’s software! I don’t know him either, I just saw his website.

So maybe starting September I can get one of his books from my library and plunge into the deepness of the world’s actual happenings. Get familiar with what the world is fighting for and against, because I believe that my unhappiness is nothing to the World’s real problems.

This post was just random burst of thoughts. I know that is kind of far from the subject of clean eating and such. After all eating clean and avoiding McDonald’s is easy, just set your mind to it. Maybe in this blog I can come up to many more different topics and ideas, not just food.

Who is your favorite famous person that you admire? Why?

Out and about

How is everybody doing?

It is a gorgeous Thursday morning here in Chicagoland!

The other day Stan and I we went out on a fun and relaxed date night! We went to a nice greek restaurant for a quick dinner before our movie started!

The place is called My Big Fat Greek Restaurant. We really enjoyed the delicious greek dishes we picked. But the star of the night was definitely the dessert- Baklava Cheesecake! How is that for fabulous?  It was to die for!

Our dinner started with a Greek salad!

It included a bed of spinach, topped with tomatoes, geen peppers, red onions, diced cucumbers, olives and mmm feta cheese! 🙂

This was my Chicken Souvlaki! It was served with steamed veggies and potatoes. The chicken was grilled to perfection, nice and tender. 🙂

My husband ordered their Meat Lover’s Pizza. I tried a piece and it was delicious!  🙂

The star of the night! Baklava Cheesecake!  🙂
Omg, it was so good! It was the perfect marriage between Baklava and Cheesecake! They didn’t forget to add walnuts and honey! It was really delicious!

The restaurant was nice and cozy. They had greek music in the background,  which reminded me of the restaurants in my country. The menu was short but to the point.

After our dinner, we went to Muvico to see “2Guns” with Danzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg.

It was the perfect ending to our day off. I like these little date nights. This is a good way to hang out and catch up. The weekdays are crazy enough,  so spending time together as much as possible and making the most of it is just priceless. 🙂

I am back!

Hello, everyone! 🙂

I hope everybody is doing good!

Yes, I am back in business with my healthy eating and exercising, the Jamie Eason’s way! 🙂 I love her.

I am on day 54 of her LiveFit Trainer again. I simply follow the meal plan and do the workout sometimes in the order they are, sometimes all mixed up. All I am trying to do is shed some weight again. For about of month and a half I am down 10 lbs now! My clothes fit looser, I have more energy, my mood is uplifted I feel great!

Back in December of 2012, me and my husband went on a little vacation to Florida! I did everything right by the book with my meals and workout (in the hotel’s gym). But when I came back I just lost it! I started eating everything that I really wanted, all bad processed foods! I stopped working out. I started to gain weight again, felt miserable, and had n energy to do anything.

Recently I decided that this no longer can go that way, so I got up and started eating right and moving my body. Then I started to follow JELFT (Jamie Eason’s LiveFit Trainer) on I remembered how good I felt while doing it, so I started again. I didn’t start it from Phase 1 this time around. I began with Phase 2, because I wanted to do more cardio. I know I can’t expect the results to be as good as If you do it from day 1, but it’s fine by me. I can always repeat the whole thing again and again in the future.

I love it when I feel so positive. This is all thanks to exercise and good clean food.

Today in the gym I did a leg workout and unfortunately injured my back while doing squats with a 10 lbs. ball. Oh well! I will rest for couple of days and I will try again. Haha! 🙂

Any bad injuries to share?

Excited about Cardio

Hi friends! 🙂

I am in particularly good mood because today was the last workout from Phase 1 from Jamie Eason’s LiveFit Trainer program. Now I will have two days off and then CARDIO TIME. 🙂 I am so super excited! Finally I was dreaming about it! 😉

I couldn’t post more often because I am busy with school and now finals are about start, so I will have to do those before anything else. When I am done with them I can post more often and tell you all about my LiveFit journey. So far I love it!

I think I have to create my own sign like ”WIAW” (What I ate Wednesday) and do something like ”WIAAW” (What I ate all week”)! It sounds silly, isn’t it? 🙂

So what I have been eating? Well I had a couple of slip ups down along the line but as Jamie say, don’t punish yourself, just move on! Start fresh the very next meal! I made a few of her recipes to try to see if they taste good. I have to be honest and say that at some point you just grow tired of egg whites and oatmeal in the morning.

Frosted Coconut Protein Cupcakes
Frosted Coconut Protein Cupcakes

This is a brand new recipe from Jamie that she posted on a couple of days ago. The cupcakes were good. Mines were a little bit on the dry side but I had to substitute some of the ingredients, and maybe that is why they didn’t turn out perfect. They were tasty though. Approved! Thanks Jamie! 🙂

I also made her Monster Meatloaf. I used chicken breast that I ground up myself in my food processor.

Monster Meatloaf

Other random stuff that I ate and enjoyed during the week:

Do you like doing cardio when you work out?

What is your favorite cardio exercise?

Good Night! 🙂

Day 17 and Lemon Protein Bars

Hello Everyone! 🙂 How are you?

I can’t believe it’s been a week since my last post. In case you are wondering, yes, I am still doing Jamie Eason’s LiveFit Trainer. Today was day 17- Chest and Triceps. 😉 My poor triceps are like little jello shots now! I feel like it was a lot of sets for the triceps and not that many sets for the chest. But I trust Jamie and I know this is there for a reason. So just stick with it. 😉

I really enjoy this exercise program. As I said in my previous posts, It is easy to follow and you do get a couple of days off for your body to rest and recharge. 🙂

As far as my diet goes, I am still eating mostly her recipes and a few of my creations that are ugly enough to break my phone camera. I have most of them in my Instagram account. If you are really curious how egg whites and oatmeal look like just look for my Cleaneatstotherescue on Instagram and Facebook and Twitter. 😉

Today I made Jamie’s Lemon Protein Bars because I had a huge lemon cake craving! 😉 Why, you would ask, right? Well, a few days ago I went to The Cheesecake Factory restaurant for lunch with my mother-in-law and I had a little taste of their

Lemoncello Cream Torte™

Layers of Vanilla Cake and Lemon Mascarpone Cream Topped with Streusel and Served with Strawberries and Whipped Cream.

Lemoncello Cream Torte

It was just glorious! It was to die for! It was the best lemon cake ever! 😉 I loved it, but I couldn’t have a piece for myself since I want to slim down, right? So I had 2 forkfuls of it. This was enough for me to fall in love with this cake. Highly recommended! 😉 I had their Carlton Salad. It was pretty good actually because I ate almost the whole thing! 😉

I am trying not to go to restaurants and coffee shops, because it is really hard to find something that fits my macros right now! I stick to salads with oil and vinegar, grilled chicken, baked tilapia and my coffee cake fix I get from Jamie’s recipes.

So here is my version of Jamie Eason’s Lemon Protein Bars:

Lemon Protein Bars

These little gems are packed with lemon flavor thanks to Crystal Light Pure with Stevia. I really like them. 😉 The taste reminds me of the lemon pound cake that they sell in Starbucks sans the glaze. Ha! 😉

I paired two of them with 1/2 cup of cottage cheese for my last meal of the day! I know, I know, No Carbs after 19:00! But only two of them won’t break the bank! I think they relieved my Lemon Cake craving and kicked it to the side. Again, Thanks Jamie! I love you! 🙂

All of this good stuff you can find on .

Questions of the night:

What’s your favorite dessert? How often do you eat it?

What is your favorite part of the body to exercise?
